QUESTION: When creating a main character, is it better to start with a good girl/guy with a drop of “bad”, or a bad girl/guy with a drop of “good”? Question provided by delightful author Lara Z

I guess it would depend on what you write. A good dose of horror is great with a lead “bad guy”, but a drop of good won’t do him any good unless that drop becomes a flood and completely washes the bad guy of all his nastiness and purifies his behaviour. But in novels, as in real life, no one is all angel or all naughty little devil.

A bad guy getting his comeuppance is great. A bad guy getting a second chance to perhaps undo all the evil he has done, or to do that one good deed, which completely changes him as a character and perhaps saves another’s life in the process – makes for an even better read.

Then there’s the Robin Hood character. He’s an outlaw, a bit of wide boy, yet we don’t think of him as a baddie as his motives are so good.

In erotica, though, the good “butter-wouldn’t-melt” girl next door with thousands of good girl points stashed in her bottom drawer, can ever so easily mix with the wrong crowd and quickly lose all her good girl points and her bottom’s drawers!
