Below you will find three lists I use for writing prompts. Fancy having a go? Choose a person, a location and an object (or two) and start writing!

Don’t think too much. Don’t edit. Don’t re-read it back.

Just write.

It can be crap, but don’t worry. You will go back later when your story is finished to polish it up. It’s like “writing Cluedo” and a great way to get your juices flowing. Writing juices, that is.

Think outside the box. For example, “cane” – for me that’s a painful punishment, but for you it could be a garden cane you have used to construct a machine to contact aliens from another planet.

Try not to pick several that seem to go together. Instead of a murderer, knife and basement try a murderer at a fashion show with crocodile clips. It doesn’t have to mean “death by crocodile clips”, *laughs* but crocodile clips should be mentioned in the story somewhere!

Make it different. Fun. Entertaining. Think of the most unusual choices and scenarios and run with it.

Better still, force yourself to go down this list and pick the first word of each  (1 x person, 1x location and 1x object) to write about, and then come back and do the same with the second and third words, etc.  Or Simply go through A to Z. The possibilities are endless.

Can be used for all forms,  flash fiction, short stories, poetry or even full length novels.
