AUTHOR BLOG HOP: Reading Habits Not for Rabbits!

Put on your reader’s hat. When shopping for a book, what do you look at to help you make a decision whether or not to purchase? How important is the cover art compared to the blurb?

Oh, the cover art on a print book is pretty high up on my must haves, although, I love most covers, there are the odd one or two, which have really put me off. I do try not to judge a book by its cover, but it’s hard if something really sticks out as wrong! Sometimes it’s just the colours that doesn’t gel with me, other times the cover just doesn’t seem to go with the title.

However, I do tend to read the back of the book blurb once a book is in my hands and chances are I’ll give the book a go anyway if the blurb is intriguing enough and the cover is not awful.

The main thing I consciously look for in a book as a reader purchasing for myself is the right genre. If an author’s book is in the wrong area in a bookshop, chances are I’ll not find it unless I am specifically looking for a particular author and have time to hunt their book down. Even then there are cases where I lose my will and leave or something else catches my eye, before I’ve even bothered to ask the bookshop staff for help.

Where ebooks are concerned, the cover doesn’t bother me as such. I am not sure why that is, but I think it has something to do with reading from the computer. It does not seem to matter quite as much. Quite often with a book in my hand I’ll keep looking at the cover either during the story, or when I put the book down to go and do something else – that obviously doesn’t happen on the computer, and with ebooks, once I start reading, if the story is good, I rarely go back to the cover and therefore don’t really care about it either way.  Oh, I wonder how many authors are cringing at me for saying that about their beloved covers. LOL

It’s what’s in it that counts, right?

Yep, that's me!

  1. It’s what’s inside that counts is totally on the money for ebooks, Angelika. For paperbooks, the cover is about finding it again when you’ve laid it around the many surfaces at home. LOL. So if the image at a glance can help me distinguish which book I had put down, or which one my spouse had put down, I can find it faster. LOL

    • I think a lot of people think covers don’t matter for ebooks, but for me they seem to matter more than print. (I know, I’m odd.) But, because I can’t touch it, or read the opening paragraph as easily as I can the print…I have to admit, I am so guilty of judging a book by its cover…when it comes to ebooks.

  2. Hi Angelika,

Saw your tweet from yesterday about wanting an interview or character interview. I’m looking to promote two books I have coming out this month, so if you’d like to do a blog swap, I’m up for it. We could both do an interview or character interview. Let me know. 🙂
